Social profile links: which platforms a page links to

Linking your official accounts confirms which ones are yours. squirrel detects profile links and cross-checks the accounts the audit knows about.

A link from your site to your social accounts is the simplest confirmation that those accounts are yours. Marked up as sameAs on an Organization node, it is also the machine-readable form, which is what feeds knowledge panels and entity matching.

The reverse matters too. An account that exists and is linked from nowhere on the site cannot be verified as yours by anything reading the page, which is what the second half of this rule looks for.

What squirrel checks

The rule runs on every crawled page over every a[href], matching each href against seven platform patterns: Facebook, Twitter and X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest. It emits up to two checks:

  • social-profiles passes when any platform matched. Message: 3 social platform(s) linked, listing the platform names.
  • social-profiles reports info when none did. Message: No social media profile links found, with Consider adding to footer as the value.
  • social-profiles-missing warns when the audit’s site metadata knows about official accounts that this page’s own links do not include. The comparison is against the page’s anchor hrefs, not against the whole site and not against the page’s sameAs list. Message: 2 known social account(s) not linked on this page, with Link your official social profiles (Organization sameAs) as the value and each missing account listed by URL and platform.

The second check needs site metadata that identified official accounts. Without it, from an offline run or one where nothing was detected, it never fires. Severity for the rule is info, weight 2.

The rule only runs when the audit classified the site as ecommerce, a marketplace, corporate, a small local business, an agency, SaaS, news, a blog, a nonprofit or media streaming. A classification below medium confidence, or an audit with no site metadata at all, runs it anyway.

How to fix it

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Organization","name":"Acme","url":"https://example.com","sameAs":["https://www.linkedin.com/company/acme","https://x.com/acme"]}

Link the accounts from the footer, which puts them on every page, and list them in sameAs on the Organization node. The second check compares the accounts the audit detected against the links on each page, so an account nobody links from this page is what it reports.

Enable / disable

Disable this rule

[rules]
disable = ["social/social-profiles"]

Disable all Social Media rules

[rules]
disable = ["social/*"]

Enable only this rule

[rules]
enable = ["social/social-profiles"]

enable replaces the default ["*"], so this is the only rule selected. Leave disable out: a rule that matches any disable pattern is skipped even when enable names it. Only an enabled setting under a rule’s own [rule_options] table overrides both lists.

Run squirrel audit https://example.com and open the Social Media section of the report. Each page is reported with the platforms it links and any known accounts it misses. Signed-out local audits need no account and cost nothing. Signed-in audits spend credits.
